Europe Day 6: Ehrenberg

Tuesday, June 26, 2018
  • Went with Carolyn and Dave to explore Ehrenberg in Austria
  • Hiked up to the castle ruins and got a close look at everything - castle dates from Medieval times.
    • Fewer tourists than at other places because a 30 minute uphill hike was required to access the ruins
  • Beautiful panoramas of Reutte and the Tirolean countryside
  • Went onto the bridge, Highline179 - longest Tibet-style footbridge in Guinness Book of World Records
    • Liz was terrified, but we went across anyway. Looking down was even worse. She did a live Instagram video of part of the trek across but unfortunately didn't figure out how to save it outside of Instagram so it's lost.
    • Bridge sways a lot
    • Takes about 7 minutes to cross the bridge
    • Dave's goal was to not touch the handrail.
  • Had lunch in Lermoos, quick imbiss-style food (bratwurts and fries)
  • Initially went to the wrong place for the alpine slide
  • After we found the place, we took turns going up, Carolyn & Dave first
    • Dave went off the track but enjoyed it
    • This slide was more luge-style. Our first alpine slide was more like a go-kart track.
    • When it was our turn, there was no line, so we waited a few minutes to give space to the family in front of us - they took a BABY down the track!
    • No regulation at the top of the slide, no helmets. Would never happen in the U.S.
  • Ridiculous detour coming back - 2 way traffic on one lane roads causing mass chaos
  • Ate dinner at Mukkefuck with Dale - Liz was happy to eat a very large salad
  • After Hugo went to bed, got gelato and toured the Michael Ende Kurpark - they had a model of what famous houses in Garmisch looked like 200 years ago - the airbnb we are staying in was included (it used to be the printing press)
Hugo with the castle. He loved being able to roam in the grass.

We were surrounded by beautiful scenery

More castle ruins
Panorama of the countryside

Nervous for crossing the bridge

Yeah, THAT bridge

Another view

Weird snail we found

We made it across! (but we had to cross back the other way)

Giant cables supporting the bridge

Heading up to the alpine slide

Mark didn't wait long enough after the baby and had to slow down a bunch on the course.

Whee!
Cute strawberry stand we stopped at so Dave could pick up some local berries

Mukkefuck is not really a word in German. They just named it that to attract more tourists. Guess what? It worked.
